Note: Manga Studio has changed it's name to Clip Studio Paint. The software still functions the same as it did in this tutorial.

Russ Abbott demonstrates the techniques to make an ornamental frame illustration using Manga Studio 5 and a Wacom Cintiq pen display. The methods used in this video can be applied to digital tattoo design, tee shirt design, and print illustration. Numerous techniques are discussed from file setup, initial sketch, refining the drawing, vector lines, symmetry rulers, making clean selections, and a unique shading method. This entire illustration took Russ around 3 hours to complete but the use of time-lapse narrows the video down to 34 minutes.

Note: While it is not necessary to have an expensive pen display such as the Wacom Cintiq 24HD like I used in this video, I highly recommend that you upgrade as soon as you have the confidence and the budget. I have seen many tattoo artists get discouraged by going with budget models like the Intuos series. In my opinion, the connection between eye and the drawing surface is critical for accurate line drawings.
