Tattooer Markus Lenhard (@luxaltera) was among the first tattooers in the world to fully embrace an all digital design workflow. Using primarily Adobe Photoshop, Markus has been honing his digital tattoo design skills for over a solid decade. Anyone who sees his incredible bio-organic/ abstract tattoo work has to admit that he makes some of the most unique and visually stunning tattoo work around.
Tattoo Smart is proud to bring you the first installment in Markus Lenhard's instructional series for Adobe Photoshop.
Photoshop Foundations for Tattoo Design LEVEL 1: No Stylus Required will get you up and running with the basics of working with found reference images.
In this 40 minute video, Markus will guide you through simple, yet incredibly useful techniques to import reference images, cut them up, rearrange, and resize them. These are some of the core techniques that every tattooist should know how to utilize, but Markus has plenty of surprises in store for even the most experienced digital artists.
It was good for beginners but I didn't learn anything new. Would love to see more advanced stuff.
Markus shows a few essentials as far as shortcuts for a nice workflow, and I especially like the trick of getting the image size correct from reference photos of the body part to be tattooed... photoshop is a vast space with many options and an intimidating looking interface but this will make it a little less daunting.
Although I learnt a couple new little tricks this tutorial is most definitely for people who have pretty much never stepped foot into Photoshop at all. That isn't a bad thing and this tutorial is very informative but I feel it should just be reflected in that regard a little better. I will be keeping my eyes out for the next in the series! Lenhard is a huge inspiration.
